The CMA Foundation Course by ICMAI is the first stage of the Certified Management Accountant program, open to students after Class 12. Covering subjects like Business Laws, Accounting, Economics, and Mathematics, this course provides a solid foundation for management accounting careers. Conducted twice a year by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), the CMA Foundation ensures students gain the skills and confidence to progress to higher levels of the CMA qualification
The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) provides the syllabus of CMA Foundation on its official website – icmai.in. Students registered for the exam should refer to the official syllabus before starting their preparation. ICMAI has released the CMA Foundation syllabus which is applicable for June 2025 term. CMA Foundation exam under 2016 syllabus has been discontinued.

CMA Foundation Course Eligibility :
- A candidate should have passed Class 10 or equivalent from a recognized Board or Institution; Or,
- Passed the Senior Secondary School Examination under the 10+2 scheme of a recognized Board or an Examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto or has passed the National Diploma in Commerce Examination held by the All India Council for Technical Education or any State Board of Technical Education under the authority of the said All India Council, or the Diploma in Rural Service Examination conducted by the National Council of Rural Higher Education.
- Any Candidate who has passed the Foundation examination conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India will be exempted from Foundation Course & vice versa ; Or,
- Any Candidate who has passed the Intermediate Examination (by whatever name called) conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will be exempted from Foundation Course. Similarly, any candidate who has passed the Intermediate examination will be exempted from Common Proficiency Test (i.e. entry level examination, by whatever name called) conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Students can revalidate their registration for any number of attempts as there is no fixed limit on the registration. Hence, there are an unlimited number of attempts available for the CMA Foundation.
What if I fail in one subject in CMA Foundation?
- If you fail one subject in the CMA Foundation exam, you will only need to reappear for that specific subject in the next exam cycle, not the entire exam.
Can I skip articleship in CMA?
- There is no exemption given from the CMA Articleship. Each and every candidate has to complete a 3 years long CMA Articleship duration to get the CMA India certification.
