IPMAT
About IPMAT
The IPMAT is an entrance exam for the 5-year Integrated Programme in
Management (IPM) (after Class 12) offered by IIMs (for example IIM Indore) and some other institutes. It is typically for students just finishing Class 12 (or
equivalent) and wanting a direct entry into a management programme spanning
undergraduate + postgraduate level. The aim is to assess aptitude in Quantitative
Ability, Verbal Ability (and in some variants Logical Reasoning / Data
Interpretation) to select students for IPM. The main variant is by IIM Indore.
There is also a variant by IIM Rohtak (with slightly different pattern) and other
institutes may follow similar structure.
General Structure of IPMAT Exam
- Mode : Computer-Based Test (CBT/online).
- Duration : Typically 2 hours (120 minutes).
- Sections : Usually 3 sections (for example at IIM Indore: Quantitative Ability (MCQ), Quantitative Ability (Short Answer), Verbal Ability (MCQ)).
- Marking Scheme : +4 marks for each correct answer.
- Negative Marking : -1 mark for wrong answer in MCQ sections in many variants.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IPMAT?
It’s an entrance exam for admission into five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) offered by institutes like IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak etc. It
allows students just finishing Class 12 (or equivalent) to directly embark on an
undergraduate + postgraduate management track.
Who is eligible to apply?
General eligibility criteria include:
- Passed (or appearing in) Class 12 / Higher Secondary / equivalent.
Note: Always check the latest year’s notification for your institute — eligibility
can vary slightly.
What is the selection process after the exam?
- After the written test, short-listing is done based on exam score (and sectional cut‐offs in many cases).
- Then a Personal Interview (PI) (and sometimes Written Ability Test) is held.
- Final admission depends on composite score (written + PI + sometimes past academics) and available seats.
Can a student without strong mathematics background crack IPMAT?
Yes — it’s a myth that only “math-students” can crack it. While QA is important,
with dedicated prep, concept clarity and consistent practice you can perform well.
However, you must strengthen your quantitative skills because the QA section is
substantial.
Are calculators allowed?
No — calculators are generally not permitted. You must rely on on‐screen scratch
pad or mental / written calculations.
Is the written exam enough for admission, or is PI crucial?
The written exam is important, but PI has significant weight. A good PI can make
a difference even if your written score is very high
